Resolving the Cosmological Missing Energy Problem
Some form of missing energy may account for the difference between the observed cosmic matter density and the critical density. Two leading candidates are a cosmological constant and quintessence (a time-varying, inhomogenous component with negative pressure). We show that an ideal, full-sky cosmic background anisotropy experiment may not be able to distinguish the two and, due to this ambiguit...
متن کاملDark Energy: a Missing Physical Ingredient
Recent observation of supernovae type Ia show clearly that there is a large scale repulsive force in the Universe. Neither of the four known fundamental interactions can account for this repulsive force. Gravity is known to be the interaction responsible for the large scale structure and evolution of the Universe. The problem with gravity is that it gives rise to a force which is attractive onl...
متن کاملMeso-level analysis, the missing link in energy strategies
Energy is essential for human societies. Energy systems, though, are also associated with several adverse environmental effects. So far societies have been unable to successfully change their energy systems in a way that addresses environmental and health concerns. Lack of policy consensus often resulted in so-called ‘stop-go’ policies, which were identified as some of the most important barrie...
متن کاملMass Determination in SUSY-like Events with Missing Energy
We describe a kinematic method which is capable of determining the overall mass scale in SUSY-like events at a hadron collider with two missing (dark matter) particles. We focus on the kinematic topology in which a pair of identical particles is produced with each decaying to two leptons and an invisible particle (schematically, pp → Y Y +jets followed by each Y decaying via Y → lX → llN where ...
متن کاملAccurate mass determinations in decay chains with missing energy.
Many beyond the standard model theories include a stable dark matter candidate that yields missing or invisible energy in collider detectors. If observed at the CERN Large Hadron Collider, we must determine if its mass and other properties (and those of its partners) predict the correct dark matter relic density. We give a new procedure for determining its mass with small error.
